누가 민족문학을 두려워하랴? - 트랜스내셔널리즘 시대의 민족문학 -

초록

This article aims at reconsidering Paik Nak-chung's discourse on national literature against the backdrop of the recent "transnational turn" in American studies. While heterogeneity and heteroglossia are praised that are supposed to be troubling to the creation of national culture in unitary terms, recent peons to global and transnational cultures may be understood as an attempt to re-create a national culture vis-à-vis transnational circumstances. The discourse on national literature in Korea is also never impervious to such a suspicion in the sense that it has been straddling between the country's historical specificities and a desire to move beyond the constraints and confines of the national and Third-World framings. With such issues in mind, this article thus seek to answer the following questions: how transnationalism complicates our understandings of regions, nations, and global communities; does transnationalism function as an enabling category that makes local, cultural, literary practices accessible to a global community by mediating national and trransnational communities; and, finally, in what ways might transnationalism limit or essentialize our reconceptualization of national literature at the very moment the Korean society is transforming itself into a multicultural, multilingual, and multiethnic one.
