Mechanical Properties and Effect of various Molecular Weight in TAC (Triacetyl Cellulose)

Pysical properties and optical properties of triacetyl cellulose(TAC) film have been investigated by using UV, TMA and UTM in order to find the effect of molecular weight of TAC base resin. TAC film was cast from TAC solution consisting of TAC base resin, plasticizer, UV absorber and mixed solvent. Three types of TAC base resin synthesized by acetylation of celluslose from cotton were used in this work. They had the same degree of acetylation, but different molecular weight. Mixture of methylene chloride and methanol were used as a solvent. Physical properties and optical properties of triacetyl cellulose film were significantly affected by the molecular weight of TAC resin Not only tensile strength and elongation at break but also optical transparency increased with as the molecular weight of TAC base resin increases. In this presentation, we will discuss the reason why the molecular weight of TAC base resin influences physical properties and optical properties.
