Poetic Figuration of Ssangseokbul (Two Rock-carved Standing Buddhas) in Yongmi-ri from the Joseon Dynasty

초록

Two standing stone Buddhas are found on the old trail through Hyeeumryeong Pass, which connects Goyang, Paju and Jangjisan Mountain. This study attempted to illuminate poems from the Joseon period with stone buddhas in which Yongmi-ri, analyzed implied views and perceptions and unveiled the cultural-historical values of stone buddhas. Ssangseokbul, which is comprised of Sakyamuni and Maitreya Buddha, was built by Queen Jeonghui in 1471, praying for the soul of King Sejo and for the good health and longevity of King Seongjong. When the stone Buddha was being built, it didn’t draw much attention from people. In the 16th century, it greatly impressed the envoys of the Ming Dynasty of China, who would visit Joseon using the old trail through Hyeeumryeong Pass. They named the magnificent stone statue “Seokjanggun”. Since the 17th century, it has been called “Ssangseokbul” or “Sssangmireuk”. In Korean poetry written by sadaebu (scholar-officials), Ssangseokbul was closer to a totem, rather than an object of faith. In terms of the historical background of the foundation of ssangseokbul, menhir culture, addition to Buddhist culture and the political situations during the late 15th century should be considered to attain a complete understanding of its position, shape and cultural function. Ssangseokbul in Yongmi-ri is an important cultural heritage which is useful in building an understanding Korean menhir culture during ancient times, including the 15th century.
