Revisit of Learner-Centered Education: Focusing on Universal Teaching & Indirect Communication

초록

This study raises questions about the concept of learner-centered education. The purpose of this study is to clarify this problem by comparing traditional educational method, indoctrination, with two alternative educational methods of Rancière's universal teaching and Kierkegaard's indirect communication. Rancière's universal teaching leads students to intellectual emancipation for human intellectual equality. Universal teaching features the instruction without any teacher’s linguistic explanation, and in this regard, is in sharp contrast with existing teacher-centered, explanatory-centered, and lecture-centered education. Kierkegaard's indirect communication for the internalization of subjective knowledge pursues teachers’ belief on existential attitude dimension by educating beyond the language. In conclusion, by comparing three teaching methods, the very meaning of learner-centered education is to be constituted by the autonomy of learners as the learned capabilities. Learner-centered education depends simply and solely on the participants’ autonomy and their wholehearted personal participation in educational activities.
