The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Career-Related Support and Career Adaptability Among Chinese International Students in South Korea: The Mediating Effect of Personal Growth Initiative

초록

This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of personal growth initiative in the relationship between parental career-related support and career adaptability among Chinese international students in South Korea. A survey was conducted with 265 Chinese students studying in Korea to analyze the relationships between perceived parental career-related support, personal growth initiative, and career adaptability. The results showed that parental career-related support had an indirect positive effect on career adaptability through personal growth initiative, rather than a direct effect. Specifically, the sub-factors of personal growth initiative—readiness for change, intentional behavior, and resource utilization—played significant mediating roles in enhancing career adaptability, while the planning factor did not show a meaningful effect. This study suggests that strategies that encourage both parental support and individual growth initiative can be beneficial in improving career adaptability among Chinese international students. Finally, limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.
