Socio-cultural Discourses of Exercising Female Body in TV Comedy Program

초록

This article explored the socio-cultural discourses of exercising female body and diet in TV comedy program, entitled in 'Gag Concert, Health Girl'. To do this, interpretive textual analysis and document analysis were employed. The results showed that, first, the dominant male power on female exercise was exposed and represented naturally. In other words, the ideal beauty standard for female was applied through control and manipulation by male trainers. Second, the extreme athleticism was intervened so that female body was recognized as the test object or hard training target and that females experienced excessive exercise on diet during the short term. Third, female body, depending on the results of weight loss, was monitored and judged as a confession of sin; the big weight loss was regarded as a great effort to get away with what she had been fat. Finally female body and diet that are managed and controled by media need to be critically redefined in terms of socially equitable gender roles, and female's human rights and health.
