An acoustic study of Mokwol Park’s poems

초록

The purpose of this acoustic experimental study is to investigate metrical characteristics in Mokwol Park’s poems using a computer implemented speech analysis system. The metrical characteristics that orally produced the poetry were analyzed by pitch, length, and intensity. Mokwol Park’s poems selected for prosodic analysis were <Meonsaramege>, <Aga>, <Hyojadong>, <Gyeongsa>, and <Nanchoipsae> and were presented by Mokwol Park. Metrical characteristics were measured from the sound spectrogram made by Praat. The study of Mokwol Park’s work sufficiently supports a substantial argument in view of the literary theory. However, it was insufficient for the linguistic method. Poetry is based upon the relationship of similar sounds. Sounds perceived as similar to one another create acceptable rhythm pairs. So, for the first time this study investigated pitch, length, and intensity of Mokwol Park’s poems acoustically. The pitch contours were analyzed from sound spectrogram made by Praat. The pitch, length, intensity patterns of Mokwol Park’s poems were within the sound hierarchy. The result shows that there were significant differences in the study of literary and acoustic methods. Even though the patterns of metrical characteristics were different from each other, there was positive correlation between features of literary and acoustic research. To better understand poetry there needs to be more poems and informants studied as well as the need to develop other variables.
