Mortise genioplasty for obstructive sleep apnea: case report

The severity of sleep-disordered breathing and anatomic configuration of the upper airway are crucial in deciding which therapy is most suitable for which patient. Nasal and palatopharyngeal surgery are the most commonly performed procedures to treat OSA, but their failure rates can be higher than 50%. Most of the failures of palatopharyngeal surgery are due to persistent airway collapse at the level of the hypopharynx-tongue base region. Many surgical procedures have been developed to solve this problem, including radiofrequency ablation, genioglossus advancement, hyoid myotomy suspension, and maxillomandibulr advancement. Recently, we performed mortise genioplasty for patient with mild OSA and retrognathia. We will present his medical information on sleep problem and surgical technique.
