Multi-culture and Contemporary Korean Poetry

초록

In modern Korean history, the concept of nation has very important meaning. Korea has formed the concept of pure-blood nation by constantly reproducing the myth of racial homogeneity. However, the nation-state based on same bloodline and language has recently entered into the process of dismantling, because elements which can be called as ‘the other’ within us have been blended extensively with the advent of globalization. The others such as married immigrants and immigrant workers have been shaking Korean society with strong myth of racially homogeneous nation and forming new Korea. Korea is on the process of moving toward the multiracial nation. Korean poetry has been reflected this change and it was the racial mixture during the Vietnam War that Korean poetry wrote about the aspects of multi-culture for the first time. Kim, Myeong-in is one of the representative poet who has embodied that tragic phenomenon. Ha, Jong-o realistically described the life of married immigrants and immigrant workers settled in Korea. Kim, Sa-yee depicted the reality where both Asian women who have become illegal immigrants and Korean factory girls fell into the minority from the perspective of capital and gender. In addition, foreigners living in Korea are actively writing poems in Korean. Married immigrant women are suffering from the lack of Korean language ability and poverty handed down from the Korean family and their poems express this existential anxiety, homesickness, will for new life in Korea, etc. Stratification system of Korean society is also reflected in their poems. In that poems written in Korean by them describe changes of Korean language in detail and vividly reflect their lives, they will become the valuable materials of multi-culture.
