Enforcement of immigration control in Colonial Korea and nationalism in Chinese media

초록

This paper investigates the conflict and tension between Korean and Chinese in Colonial Korea, the enforcement of immigration control in Colonial Korea and the change of the image of Korean in Chinese media accordingly. Japanese government adopted the policy to ban Chinese laborers to immigrate in homeland, Japan. But she should arrange the policy to Colonial Korea because it was linked with the problem of Manchuria. Government-general in Korea should accommodate Chinese laborers to some extent, as long as Chinese government accepted Korean people to inhabit and cultivate Chinese land. Besides, good quality of Chinese laborers satisfied the need of Japanese construction industry in Korea in 1920s. However, the intensifying rivalry between Chinese laborers and Korean laborers and the nationalistic issues from Manchuria that Chinese authorities oppressed Korean tenant farmers deepened emotional gap between Korean and Chinese in Korea gradually. 1927 witnessed the first widespread anti-Chinese riot in Korea. In 1931, Wanbaoshan Incident ignited Korean anti-Chinese sentiment to lead the tragic riot to kill over 100 Chinese people. Chinese perception about Korean was dramatically changed from oppressed victims into the collaborators with Japanese imperialism. Subsequent Mukden Incident cemented this image decisively. However, anti-Chinese riot stemmed not only from nationalistic issues of Manchuria but also from long-lasting domestic tension.
