Narrative Geography in the Records related to Russian Conquest in 1658

초록

This paper investigated the records about the Russian Conquest in 1658 and identified the anthropo-geographic meaning of the narrative space. While the northern region of Korea was the important site in the ancient history of Korea, there is no historic record on it. Thus, the existing awareness on that region was like dream or fantasy. Russian conquest by Joseon and "Bukjeongrok(Defeat of Russian)" by Shin Yu changed the northern region which was perceived as fantasy world for a long time into the space of reality and history. A number of records was produced about Russian Conquest in 1658. Those records newly induced the interest on the geography in the northern region. Since a variety of texts was created for one event, Russian Conquest, this paper established two directions of discussion. One selected "Bukjeongrok" by Shin Yu, the true records, as the text. The route of Joseon army at that time was examined and the whole process deployed on that route was analyzed to identify the narrative meaning. In accordance with the analysis, the whole movement route of Joseon army was extensively reconstructed and so the meaning of diverse events from departure to return to the main land was understood by narrative unit. The other approach summarized the geography in the northern region which was just the world in the imagination along with the fictions. The nature and geography in the northern region in fictions described the world with a number of rivers and abundant local products. In the fictions, the northern region was another international society which kept the order around China. The fictions described Russia as the very formidable existence. Tension and sense of reality created in "Bukjeongrok" were significantly reduced. It's because Russia was not properly recognized and thus, Russia was subject only to the general heroic and narrative grammar focusing on interest. This paper used the term "Narrative Geography" to investigate the records of facts and fictions. Narrative geography is the quest for geographic background of a story and embraces the historic sites and the space in fictions. All events are deployed in geographic space and constructed as a form of story. Memory and discourse on such events determine the depth and value of geographic space. In a broad sense, this paper was included in the northern geography on the aspect of Korean studies.
