Organically modified silica particles were prepared by controlling the hydrolysis / condensation rate and the solubility of organosilanes such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS). The dielectric constant and the steric effects of the solvent and catalyst have been known as the major factors that influence the reactivities of organosilanes. In preparing the modified particles, the choices of catalyst and solvent are the key parameters. In this study, the influences of the catalyst and solvent on the properties of the modified particles were investigated.
