Squeal noise emanating from car brakes causes customer dissatisfaction and increases warranty costs. To reduce the squeal noise of the vehicle brake systems, the complex eigenvalue analysis has been widely used to study the stability of the brake systems. The noise reduction of squeal can be achieved by decreasing the real part of the complex eigenvalue, which indicates the instability of the brake system when it becomes positive. Recently, many research teams have focused on developing new analysis methodologies, and applying uncertainty analysis method and surrogate models to reduce the computational cost to predict the noise performance. However, the design optimization of the vehicle brake systems has rarely been studied. In this paper, design sensitivity analysis of disc brake squeal for design optimization is performed to select the dominant design variables to the noise of the vehicle brake system.
