DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTATIONAL HUMAN MODELS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO RADIATION DOSIMETRY STUDIES

Purpose : Various computational human models have been developed for radiation dosimetry studies in Korea. Result : The HDRK-Man model was constructed from the image data of serially sectioned color slice images from a Korean adult male cadaver. The developed model has the weight and height of the reference Korean for radiation protection in Korea. The masses of the organs and tissues were adjusted to the reference Korean data. The HDRK-Man model was also transformed to NURBS and polygon surface models, with the detailed structures of small and large intestines. For the development of the voxel models for the ATOM and RANDO physical phantoms, these phantoms were scanned with a CT scanner and, then, the acquired images were segmented for air, skeleton, lung, and soft tissues. For the ATOM phantoms, the computational models were developed as hybrid models, i.e., ATOM-MIRD hybrid models, which combine the voxel models, constructed from the CT image data, and the MIRD5 mathematical phantoms. The organs of the MIRD5 mathematical model were successfully transferred to the hybrid models, replicating the dimensions of the organs within a few %. Conclusion : The developed computational models were then imported to Monte Carlo radiation transport codes, such as MCNPX and Geant4, and used for radiation dose calculations. The calculated results were very reasonable when compared with other models in the literature.
