This study set out to investigate how the American hegemony and the state-centric patriarchal ideology worked as powerful hegemonies with the patterns of tastes in serial stories in a newspaper against the urban culture inundated with American culture in the 1950s. The study especially focused on "femininity" that would be processed according to new social demands and function as the base of gender habitus during a social upheaval. A look at the cultural tastes of serial stories during those days such as habits, items of personal preference, leisure space, housing styles, furniture arrangement, food habits, and lifestyles reveals that the lives of the middle and upper classes were being replaced with things that were American. It was also found that those who had suffered suppression during the war and poverty after the war considered American culture as the object of longing and imitation but gradually developed ambivalent emotions of fascination and fear. Combined with "femininity," the culture of American tastes heavily displayed a folk aesthetic tendency, and the materialism and discriminating value assessment of women's cultural tastes served as symbolic violence in daily consciousness and symbolic gender hierarchy. The discrimination and materialism of femininity worked on the daily consciousness of women and men via the American tastes through the patterns of tastes in serial stories in the 1950s. As the symbolic power worked as symbolic violence according to the manifestation of female habitus, female beauty was deemed to be embodied by those who had femininity containing "intellectual charm," a value of masculinity, and settle down as a "cultured person." It indicates that the uniqueness of "femininity" does not derive from the nature of female existence but is socially and historically defined in various social contexts and relationships. The findings suggest that serial stories via the medium of newspaper served as a venue for the ruling class of the times or the intellectual class to implement the strategies of preserving or upgrading their class status in a cultural sense.
