현대시에 나타난 연민과 배려의 시학

초록

Compassion is the most fundamental emotion of lyric poetry in that it reaches to the deepest levels of being. Kim, In his poetic essay “Si-hon”(Poetic Soul), Kim So-wol said that there is a pure atmosphere in an insect crying alone, a reed being withered by the wind in an open field, and a wave romping around a distant sea. As an underlying spirit of lyric poetry, Kim’s ‘Si-hon’ has something in common with contemporary ecological consciousness and is coming from a kind of “universal compassion” toward every lonely, humble, and solitary person in the world. Baek Seok is a representative poet who consistently showed compassion toward the poor in his use of the poetic signifier of poverty. His attention to alienated and poor people is the most important feature of his poems, and his work has been very influential on poets of later generations. In particular, those poems written with the direct background of the Japanese colonial period reveal his peculiar “social compassion.” This social compassion has been inherited by poets of later periods and formed a thick vein of realism. Different from social compassion, compassion toward an individual object is often presented as the principle of lyricism. This could be called “relational compassion” and the principle of lyricism in which the greatest soars from the most trivial moment is concretely realized in here. Consideration is the very concept that materializes this compassion. Therefore, compassion and consideration are the most significant aspects of ethics in human society. The first step toward justice in society is the intensification of social practice for minorities and those alienated and abandoned through this perspective of compassion and consideration.
