정치학적 문화 연구의 지형과 지평

초록

While such macro-level changes as the end of the Cold War, acceleration of globalization, coming of information society and diffusion of democracy all contribute to the growing significance of cultural factors in our political life, the discipline of political science has been relatively silent on the cultural dimension of politics except for the study of political culture. An analysis of the state of political science in Korea reveals that political studies of culture in Korea also has been concentrated on the study of political culture up to the mid 1990s. Since then, the trend has been somewhat changed and much ink has been spilt on multicultural society, identity politics, cultural diversity, and politics of symbolism. However, there are still dearth of study on cultural policy, although it deserves much attention from political scientists in the sense that the realm of cultural policy is closely related to the issue of the authoritative distribution of social values and the provision of public goods, which are the core elements of political activities. This study suggests that the field of cultural policy is likely to provide a fertile ground where political studies could flourish because the theoretical and conceptual tools developed in political science will be highly relevant for analyzing cultural policy.
