A double-edged anchoring effect in the early design decision: design anchoring and design intentionality

초록

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the nature of design information and the effects of overconfidence in design anchoring. A total of twenty-eight novice designers carried out a two-way between subjects study administered by the four types of design information. The empirical findings revealed that consistent design knowledge and evidence might increase designer’s overconfidence of their design solution, which in turn might lead to a strong design anchoring. However, at the same time, the relatively biased groups might be easier to convey their original design intentionality to the user. This double-edged anchoring effect would be of interest for HCI/design researchers in the use of design information and design strategy.
