노년기 수용적 미술 감상의 치유적 경험에 관한 질적 사례 연구: 자아통합을 중심으로

A Qualitative Case Study on the Healing Experience of Receptive Art Appreciation in Old Age: Focusing on Ego Integrity

초록

This qualitative comparative case study examined how two adults in their 70s, with contrasting life histories, experienced voluntary art appreciation at the Chang Ucchin Museum of Art as a healing experience toward ego integrity in later life. Drawing on Erikson's theory that life-historical type shapes the crisis of later life, achievement-oriented Participant A and relationally caregiving Participant B were purposefully selected. Within- and cross-case comparison across multiple data sources showed that both participants' experi- ences were shaped by three intersecting layers of comfort—connection, care, and dwelling—arising from the interplay of life history, artwork, and viewer; this comfort functioned not as an outcome of healing but as its condition and mediator. Life history served as an interpretive language shaping artwork meaning: Participant A moved through emptying and Participant B through being filled, converging on the same task of ego integrity. This study suggests that receptive art appreciation, without an act of creation, can mediate the healing experience toward ego integrity in later life, and points to the museum's potential as a healing environment.
