Challenges Faced by Teachers in Immigrant Neighborhoods: A Political Dilemma Perspective

초록

The influx of immigrants into Korea has given rise to immigrant residential concentration accompanied by residential segregation. This study sheds light on the challenges faced by teachers in immigrant neighborhoods from a political dilemma perspective. Interview data were gathered from a total of 25 teachers working in schools located within areas characterized by high levels of immigrant residential concentration. A semantic network analysis was used to analyze the data. The data showed that the difficulties were closely related to various school, home, community factors. These patterns suggest that the difficulties arise not only from pedagogical or intra-school challenges. Rather, the difficulties appear to emanate from administrative and outside-of-school factors. Considering that these factors are largely out of individual teachers’ control, these findings reveal the “political dilemma” aspects of the challenges in “open system” schools.
