Growth of Arrayed Nanorods of CdS from aqueous sloutions

Semiconductor nanorods have stimulated much research interest because of their unique physical properties and potential for optoelectronic device applications. Among them, CdS has been recognized as one of the promising nanomaterials for such high technology applications as laser light emitting diodes, solar cells, and photodetectors. In this study, we have prepared self -assembled CdS nanorods from aqueous solutions by evaporation -induced crystallization. Self-assembled nanorods could be obtained by simple evaporation of water with heating from a reaction system of hydrated cadmium chloride (CdCl2·2.5H2O), thiourea ((NH2)2CS), and ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (CH3OCH2CH2OCH3). The hexagonal faced, or cylindrical shaped nanorods were formed simply by changing evaporation condition. The synthesis provides a template-free approach nanorods formation at low-cost, large-scale, and relatively low temperatures. The crystalline nature of CdS nanorods and morphologies of CdS nanorods have been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
