초록
Popular culture is currently elaborating mythical narratives more than ever in the 21st century despite the fact that technology and capitalism has been advanced. Ancient myths and the Bible became main sources providing popular culture with stories recently. Korean media are also frequently carrying religious themes, particularly from the Bible. Korean network television dramas East of Eden and Cain and Abel are the two cases that this research looks into. This study will examine social aspects of biblical theme in Korean popular culture, particularly highly rated television dramas. First, I conduct a textual analysis of Korean drama narratives referring to theories of Levi Strauss and Edmund Leach. I attempt to make a comparison between the narrative structure of Genesis and its adoption to Korean drama. Second, this research is getting into the social aspect of creating myths in Korean popular culture by applying Carl Jung’s theories.
