국제정치와 알제리 문화담론의 재구성

초록

This paper aims to reflect upon the Algerian identity within the context of International Relations (IR). The conceptual and analytical framework consists of culture, ideology, and history. The reason for analyzing the Algerian case can be summarized as follows. First, the Algerian case challenges the dominant epistemology in IR in which non-European countries have been largely objectified. Moreover, it problematizes the material and structure-centered approach that has long been central to IR thereby sheds light on the necessity of cultural turn in IR. Second, the geopolitical implications of Algeria show that the Algerian political culture is closely related to the change of the international system. It is in this respect that memories by which Algerian national identity is formed have been blocked, manipulated, and obligated by political elites. In short, a comprehensive understanding of cultural discourse and the interpretive comprehensiveness are critical to a holistic approach to IR.
