A phenomenological study on the job insecurity experience of hotel workers after COVID-19

초록

The purpose of this study is to understand and explore the meaning of the experiences and coping strategies of hotel workers who experienced job insecurity after COVID-19. A phenomenological study was conducted to understand the experience of job instability of hotel workers in 4 and 5 star hotels in Seoul Korea. To collect data, the researcher developed open-ended and semi-structured questions and conducted in-depth interviews with a total of six people based on sub-questions. For data analysis, Moustakas’ Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method, one of the phenomenological research methodologies, was applied. A total of 11 themes, 40 meaning units, and 131 significant statements were identified as the study results. In the sense of experience, five themes were derived: ‘tired body and mind’, ‘dark present, invisible future’, ‘increased workload, amplification of conflicts’, ‘us like components’, and ‘facing economic problems’. Experience coping was derived under six themes: ‘time to escape from reality’, ‘preparation for the new future’, ‘now with Corona, time to adapt’, ‘reward for suffering’, ‘the challenger is a true winner’, and ‘the awakening power of positivity’. This study can be used as basic data to cope with crises like global pandemic that hotel companies may face in the future by analyzing hotel workers’ experiences in job instability and coping experiences in the COVID-19 situation.
