A Study on the Development of Football and the Characteristics of Football Culture in Pyongyang during Japanese Occupation

초록

This study aims to examine and analyze as to how football and football culture were developed and forged in Pyongyang, the second largest city in Korea during Japanese occupation. It could be summarized that the two impetus in developing football in Pyongyang were strong aspirations of people residing in the city for modernization and their deep-rooted regionalism accentuated by keen rivalry with Gyungsung. The modernization of Pyongyang was remarkable in terms of its transmission of Christianity and development of industrial area, and Pyongyang people had a vast interest in football, another symbol of modernity. The passion for football in Pyongyang could be further accelerated by the rivalry with Gyungsung. Its regionalism and sense of rivalry with the capital was vividly projected onto the field at Gyung-Pyong Football Tournament, where Pyongyang footballers developed their characteristic football style mainly focused on physical strength closely bound up with its tradition of stone-fight and Nalparam
