The purpose of this study is analyze major issues and the positions of participants in the Geneva Conference in 1954. In the conference, both UN and Communist sides perceived that the peaceful settlement of the Korean question after the Korea War was almost impossible. Accordingly, the rupture of the conference had been expected even before the holding of the conference. On the one hand, neither sides sought to resume the war in the Korean peninsula. On the other hand, neither wanted to see the peninsula congrolled exclusively by the other. Consequently, both UN and Communist sides suggested proposals which were not acceptable to the other. In a word, the surrounding powers prefer to maintain the Korean peninsula divided. Given the situation, both sides tired to criticize the other that it was not eager to unify Korea. As a result, the Geneva conference ended only with increasing antagonism and distrust on the Korean peninsula.
