초록

Around the port opening, Japan started to have more and more interest in Chosun and investigated its circumstances in general. And they began to publish guidebooks to enter Chosun. Looking into the guidebooks by periods, first, we can see that the guidebooks were published not by individuals but by groups mostly before the Russo-Japanese War. And war correspondents spied Russia and kept records for Japan to grope for chances to enter the continent. Second, the time that Japanese sailed to Chosun decisively was right after the Russo-Japanese War. After the outbreak of the war, those guidebooks mostly dealt with guidance for sailing, guidance about RussiaㆍManchuria, how to launch and manage a business, or geography. Due to the Japanese desperateness resulted from population increase or food shortage, they intrigued Japanese to move to Chosun. Japanese interest in Russia or Manchuria and also geography was to conquer Chosun after the victory in the Russo-Japanese War and attempt continental invasion. Third, the guidebooks for sailing published before the Japanese occupation contained the memoirs of people who had became successful even with little capital in order to recommend Japanese to sail to Chosun, ‘the infinite repository’. In the guidebooks, the Japanese journalists either emphasized the dark side of Chosun using ‘civilization’ and ‘brutality’ dichotomically while living in Gyeongseong or produced discriminative image about chosun by describing Chosun people’s savageness. And they also appealed to Japanese by emphasizing Korea’s colonization mainly dealing with minor farmers’ transplant policy or tried to promote assimilation between Chosun and Japan after the economic assimilation realized by colonization through moving. As written above, the reason why Japan published the guidebook to move to Chosun is as follows: ① to overcome Japanese’ lack of information and ignorance about the situation in Chosun, ② to extend ‘the Japanese line of advantage’ for the expansion of Japanese people and encourage sailing to Korea, ③ ‘instruct’ Korea that has become their protected state after the Russo-Japanese War, and ④ to develop ‘the source of wealth’ in Korea, the repository of Asia, and manage it as its colony. line of advantage.
