The Choroid in Retinal Vascular Diseases

The choroid is a vascular layer that supplies the outer retina. The thickness of the choroid can change in the context of several retinal vascular diseases. Nevertheless, our understanding of choroidal change in retinal vascular diseases has been limited due to difficulties in visualizing the choroid. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), especially enhanced depth imaging and swept-source OCT, provides detailed visualization of the choroid and allows for its quantitative evaluation. Choroidal thickening or thinning varies in retinal vascular diseases depending on the mechanism of choroidal change, which can include altered permeability or blood flow. In some diseases, choroidal thickness can be further affected by treatments such as antivascular endothelial growth factor, steroid, or laser photocoagulation. In this chapter, we summarize the choroidal changes that occur in several retinal vascular diseases and discuss the future direction of choroidal imaging. ? 2017 Elsevier Inc.
