Sound-masking technique for soundscape of combined noise in open public spaces

A sound-masking technique was applied to combined noise in order to reduce the annoyance of the construction noise and traffic noise, and to improve the soundscape in open public spaces. Building construction and nearby traffic noise were recorded binaurally through a dummy head and the sound quality (SQ) characteristics as well as spectral and temporal aspects of the noises were specified. Synthesized masking sounds were produced by considering the SQ characteristics of the combined noise, and the sound-masking system, consisting of the distributed speakers and control device, is being applied to the boundaries of construction sites. Subjective evaluations on the soundscape are being conducted in terms of acoustic preference before and after the application installation of the sound-masking system to verify the effectiveness of the system.
