The Collective-Fantasy Structure of Paradise and Its Critique in Paradise: Focusing on Yoshimoto Takaaki’s Critical Mechanism

초록

This study examines representations of paradise in Paradise, a Butoh work choreographed by Maro Akaji, through Yoshimoto Takaaki’s theory of collective fantasy. Reconstructing Yoshimoto’s framework into a three-stage critical mechanism, the study analyzes paradise in religious, communal, and affiliative dimensions. The results show that paradise in the work is not a single ideal image but a collective-fantasy structure that naturalizes order and affiliation. Religious, communal, and affiliative paradises are shaped through taboo and authority, the formation of “we,” and the reorganization of boundaries and hierarchy. The work also reveals the pathological operation of these structures and, in its ending, suggests the possibility of critical distance and reflection from within collective fantasy.
