미국의 동화주의적 이민자 정책과 다문화주의

초록

This essay was written as a part of planning for critical review of assimilative immigrant policy which is progressed under the name of multiculturalism in Korean society. For this, after looking into the assimilative immigrant policy of the US, we will look into historical development and chaos of multicultural discourse in the US. The United States which is the country of immigrants has progressed various immigrant policies so far, but on its foundation the ideology of assimilative doctrine is deep-rootedly inherent, and it means that the immigrant policy of the US has close relation with eugenics logic of choice and exclusion. Multiculturalism basically respects the difference but not differentiation and in spite of the fact that based on this it has character of postmodern planning which aims for equality, the aspect of assimilative immigrant policy development gives great instruction to us who enter multiracial and multicultural society. Accordingly, showing that assimilative doctrine which can be called antithesis of multiculturalism is an important method and ideology for the US to treat immigrants and minority races will provide us with basic recognition. This enables us to review critically the immigrant policy and multicultural discourse of our society, where the term 'multi-culture' becomes frequent and inconsiderate multicultural policy is on everybody's mouth.
