The Feasibility of Weight Shape Classification Method based on Figure Rating Scale

초록

Throughout the years, various devices were developed and used to draw the body for evaluating body image. However, many problems, such as setting standards, existed in actually applying these processes. The purpose of this study is to compare the standards of BMI, which the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity has developed and is based upon the figure rating scale that Bhuiyan has introduced. Furthermore, evaluate the feasibility of this method. A total of 431 female dance major students were selected from 12 different universities across the Seoul and Gyeong-gi region to serve as subjects for this study. The selected figure rating scale was the expanded version of ‘Contour Drawing Rating Scale’(CDRS: Thompson & Gray,1995) to 17 body pictures and presented by Shroff in 2004. To estimate the body categorization of CDRS, which stands on the BMI standards, regression analysis was applied. Also, to check if the standard of the BMI weight classification index and the Bhuiyan’s weight classification index are highly consistent, cross tabulation and Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient (ρ) were calculated. The analysis results were the following. 1) The weight classification index of CDRS, which Bhuiyan had presented, was generally lower than the one based on BMI. 2) Correlation coefficient (ρ) was shown as .42 between the BMI based on weight classification index and the weight classification index that Bhuiyan had introduced. However, only 17.3% between these two indexes were consistent. The results implied that the feasibility of the weight classification index, which Bhuiyan had presented, was very low. This states that when this index is applied to female dance majors ,the figures of these students may be exaggerated. It was concluded that Bhuiyan’s weight classification index does not fit as a standard to apply to Korean female dance major students.
