A Study on the Historical Poems (Yeongsasi) on the Three Kingdoms by Yun Gi (Mumyeongja)

초록

This study examines the historical consciousness and poetic transformation manifested in the fifty-six yeongsasi (詠史詩) on the Three Kingdoms narrative written by Yun Gi (1741 1826). No precedent has been found for a connect ed series of fifty-six poems surveying the entire arc of the period from the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the fall of Shu-Han in a diachronic manner. The analysis yields three main findings. First, Yun Gi reconstructed Three Kingdoms figures and events on the foundation of the Theory of Shu-Han Legitimacy (Chokhan jeongtongron), foregrounding Zhuge Liang as a paradigmatic embodiment of loyalty while portraying Cao Cao and the Sima clan as treacherous usurpers. Second, by presenting historical facts in the first two lines of the seven-character quatrain and subverting them in the final two, he exposed moral failings concealed beneath the triumphant façade of the victors and paradoxically articulated the sublime values embedded in the tragedy of the defeated. Third, by diachronically capturing major historical turning points, he emphasized the enduring values of righteousness (uiri, 義理) and political legitimacy (myeongbun, 名分) amid political chaos. Yun Gi's series does not merely repeat the received Theory of Shu-Han Legitimacy, but gives it concrete form through irony and didactic admonition (pungge, 諷戒), reflecting the rigorous historical consciousness and critical awareness characteristic of eighteenth-century Joseon intellectual thought.
