Limitations of‘freedom’discourse used by the Yoon Seok-yeol government: Focused on the President's speech

초록

This study aims to analyze the intentions behind the 'freedom' discourse that President Yoon Seok-yul has consistently and repeatedly emphasized in large and small scales public appearances since his inauguration. 'Freedom' is a concept that has been mythologized into a positive connotation in people's perceptions, although its definition and use is ideologically contested in the fields of political philosophy and economics. Through a critical discourse analysis, this study examines how the discourse of freedom in presidential speeches, which have political and social significance, has been fixed and expanded the direction of social events implications and government policy implementations during Yoon's presidency. We found that, first, the discourse of freedom in the presidential speeches operated as a partisan logic, perpetuating the binary confrontation between the South Korea-US-Japan camp and the North-China-Russia camp. Second, the discourse of freedom as a market logic, arguing that economic growth can be achieved through the deregulation that allow corporations to operate freely so that citizens can have the trickle-down effect. Third, it was found that freedom was set as a value that should be defended by any means necessary, and the activities of groups and individuals who opposed freedom of partisan logic and market logic were defined as deviated, or illegal acts and ruled by coercive state intervention.
