북한과 노스탤지어 관광- 친숙성-신기성 연속체 패러다임에 대한 이론적 반증 -

초록

This research has three research objectives: 1) to critically discuss the current novelty–familiarity continuum paradigm, 2) to see if the context of South Koreans’ nostalgia toward North Korea can be a counterargument case for the novelty-familiarity continuum, and lastly, 3) to test the relationships among familiarity, nostalgia and novelty seeking the tourism in North Korea. Based on a literature review, six hypotheses and a research model were derived. The model was tested using the data collected from 200 South Koreans. EFA revealed two factors of novelty seeking as tourism motive, which are “new experience seeking” and “surprising/thrilling experience seeking”. Multiple regression analysis results showed that familiarity affects positively both historical nostalgia and personal nostalgia. It further revealed that historical nostalgia positively affects “new experience” dimension of novelty seeking while does not affect significantly “surprising/thrilling experience” dimension of novelty seeking and personal nostalgia positively affects “surprising/thrilling experience” dimension of novelty seeking whereas it doesn’t have significant effect on “new experience” of novelty seeking. As results of bootstrap test, it was revealed that historical nostalgia partially mediates the relationship between familiarity and “new experience” dimension of novelty seeking whereas personal nostalgia fully mediates the relationship between familiarity and “surprising/thrilling experience” dimension of novelty seeking. In theoretical perspective, this study would introduce the context that novelty and familiarity not only coexist but also positively correlate. We also suggested a conceptual framework of novelty-familiarity coexistence in nostalgia tourism to guide future research.
