초록

The purpose of this post is to grope the necessity of liberal arts education in the university which corresponds with the knowledge-based society in 21st century and the direction to it. In the meantime, Korean universities have greatly confused the education objective and teaching method in terms of quantitative expansion, transformation to comprehensive university system with graduate school, diversification of social role of university, market orientation of university due to Super capitalism, and change of knowledge. Recent developing and enforcing variety of reading education programs as liberal arts education are the movement for Korean universities to recover the identity of university. Moreover, universities are trying to expand the knowledge of liberal arts, the ability to understand and control the complex and multiplex dynamics between the human being and the world. But the reading education program conducted by Korean universities did not prepare the accurate education objective and teaching method and is concerned to be absolute the knowledge of western culture as a common knowledge. For the alternatives, relativizing the common knowledge and accepting Rorty’s irony to reading education in order to enhance one’s moral level and expand the creative thinking skill are required. These are the alternatives to compliment the problem of liberal art education. But these are also the basic method and spirit to understand the differences and grope the way to coexist one another.
