An Imagism of Returning and Fantasy - A Study of Jang, Manyoung -

초록

Jang, Manyoung’s poetry could be largely divided into poems of returning which describe the speaker’s will to go back to its childhood or home and poems of fantasy which aim to depart from reality and depict a new world. The former has a characteristics of representing childhood experiences as a past perception process rather than present retrospection experiences A present self who thinks of the past is being strongly set up and further, by immerging in the past entirely, poems make the past perception process revive vividly. Rather than the subject, contents of recollection are remained protruded because the perception process of the object is occurred fully into it. On the other hand, Jang, Manyoung’s poetry has a characteristics of continually using lots of fantastical mechanisms. And this make it possible for him not to be limited as ‘a pastoral modernist.’ When he sketches the utopia of life or imagines wandering from reality, he constantly chooses a fantastic situation as a kind of nostalgia for paradise. These ‘returning’ and ‘fantasy’ are two streams of his poems and they have an intention of indirectly criticizing historical reality and are imagism strategies and results by Jang, Manyoung trying to chimerically produce a new world through new images.
