The preparation of microsized uniform silica particles by the hydrolysis and condensation of concentrated tetraetheylorthosilicate(TEOS) solutions has been studied in various cosolvent systems(methanol/1-octanol and ethanol/1-octanol). Octanol was introduced to control the hydrolysis/condensation rate and reduce the polarity of the system (Modified seed growth). It is also expected to stabilize large particles. The monodisperse spherical silica powders over 2mm were obtained using a siliconalkoxide(commercially available TEOS) with short and long chain alcoholic solvents. Also, the turbidity experiment showed that the silica growth and nucleation proceed mainly through the reaction of small oligomers instead of monomeric species.
