The impact of workplace gossip on perceived insider status and team potency: Focusing on flight attendants

초록

As crew members often spend extended periods together, including during overseas layovers, strong relationships significantly impact their work performance. While gossip is traditionally perceived negatively, it can also play a positive role within teams. This study explores the motivations behind workplace gossip, focusing on information gathering, entertainment, negative influence, and group protection, and examines its impact on perceived insider status and team potency in the airline industry. Additionally, this study analyzes the moderating effect of susceptibility to peer influence on gossip outcomes. An online survey of 217 Korean airline cabin crew members revealed that entertainment and group protection positively influenced team potency through perceived insider status, while negative influence had adverse effects. The findings highlight the positive effects of gossip in team dynamics and offer valuable insights for improving team management and human resource strategies in the aviation industry.
