Analysis of Origin-Destination Characteristics and the Shortest Travel Path of Public Bike Users in the Morning Peak-Hour Period - Focused on the 2017 Travel OD Data of Public Bike Sharing in Seoul, Korea

It is important to understand the bicycle rental station’s environment and travel behaviors, for a shared bicycle to take its place in commuting mode. Therefore, this study analyzed not only the characteristics of origin and destination for public bike sharing users, but also the characteristics of shortest travel path during the commuting time period in the weekdays. To summarize the results, first, this study confirmed that the generation of public bike sharing trip was high in the areas with detached single-family houses or multi-family houses. In general, the areas with detached single-family or multi-family houses are more likely to increase walking trips which are associated with the demand of public bike sharing. Second, it appears that there are many departures and arrivals of shared bicycles at rental stations far from the subway entrance. This means that the shared bicycle is used as a first mile or last mile transportation that connects between the first point of departure and the getting-on point of public transportation, and the getting-off point and the last point of destination. Third, a lot of shared bicycles are used in places where the ratio of bicycle lanes and bicycle-pedestrian multi-use lanes to the path length is high. Bicycle-pedestrian multi-use lanes need to secure sufficient space to enable safe travel because bicycles and pedestrians use the road together.
