正祖의 韓愈 산문 수용 연구 :『四部手圈』중 韓愈 散文 節錄 특징을 중심으로

During the year 1798, King Jeongjo published a book titled “四部手圈” (Sibushoujuan), in which he classified and compiled essential passages from the texts he had been reading since his time as the Crown Prince. These passages were categorized into 經 (classics), 史 (history), 子 (philosophy), and 集 (miscellaneous writings). The last section included essays by the Eight Masters of the Tang and Song dynasties (Tangsongbadajia) and the prose of Luzhi, with the collection of essays by the Eight Masters being referred to as “八家手圈” (Bajishoujuan). Bajishoujuan used an excerpting method, selectively including parts of the prose, and among them were 92 essays by Hanyu. This paper aims to examine the characteristics of King Jeongjo’s acceptance of Hanyu’s essays by scrutinizing the excerpted patterns. When excerpting Hanyu’s essays, King Jeongjo condensed content-centric prose by compressing the key points. Prose with outstanding literary expressions, such as metaphors, imaginative creations, and rhythm, were selectively excerpted to highlight the prominent literary techniques. Moreover, King Jeongjo meticulously excerpted by deleting one or two characters or entire paragraphs, effectively compressing the essence of the prose or making the context more concise. Through these methods, it is evident that King Jeongjo deeply understood Hanyu’s essays. Finally, King Jeongjo transformed the titles of Hanyu’s essays, added characters not present in the original text, or replaced original characters with different ones. Through these alterations, he not only provided a new interpretation of the original meaning but also refined the expression of the prose in a more sophisticated literary manner. This active and subjective intervention and transformation in Hanyu’s essays characterize King Jeongjo’s reception of Hanyu’s prose.
