조정철의 「탐라잡영(耽羅雜詠)」 연구

초록

The childhood name of Jo Jeong-cheol(趙貞喆, 1751~1831) is Seonggyeong and Taeseong and his pen name is Jeongheon and Daereung. He was not widely known in the history of literature up to now but I have been interested in and studying him. He was banished to Jeju for 27 years in his life in exile for 29 years as the person who lived in exile for the longest period during Joseon period. His collection of works "Jeongheonyeonghaechogamrok(靜軒瀛海處坎錄)" described only about his experience in exile. So it is very unusual case. "Tamrajapyeong(Songs of Tamra)"(耽羅雜詠) "Jeongheonyeonghaechogamrok (靜軒瀛海處坎錄)" comprised 33 works. It is worth noticing Tamrajapyeong because it contained detailed information on Jeju(Tamra in the past) in terms of numbers and contents. Description on customs and climates in Jeju also contained the viewpoints of the writer on Jeju. So it is very important. Jo Jeong-cheol very rigorously criticized customs and climates of Jeju and also wrote very interesting information on the government employees of Jeju. The records in Tamrajapyeong enabled to identify how the government employees dealt with the residents of Jeju and exiles. Furthermore, the residents of Jeju were severely suffered from compulsory labor and preparation of specialties to be presented to the kings or high-ranking officers. Jo Jeong-cheol tried to reveal the reality of Jeju residents' life without ignoring hardship of Jeju residents. Through-composed poems related to Jeju generally had awe and curiosity on Jeju. However, Jo Jeong-cheol accused of the irrational reality based on the actual events in Jeju. Nevertheless, it would be his limit that he observed Jeju with the thoroughly one-sided viewpoint of a migrant to Jeju island.
