Effects of Yoga on Lower-Limb Muscle Strength, Balance, and Quality of Life in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

초록

This study investigated the effects of yoga on lower-limb muscle strength, balance ability, and quality of life in older adults through a meta-analysis, drawing on both domestic and international studies. The purpose of the study was to identify standardized and effective yoga intervention protocols through meta-analysis and to provide appropriate intervention strategies for improving lower-limb muscle strength, balance ability, and quality of life in older adults. Based on the PICOS framework, relevant literature published up to December 2025 was searched in PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and RISS. After the screening process, a total of 28 studies were included in the meta-analysis out of 2,624 articles identified in the English-language databases and 587 articles identified in the Korean-language database. Data were analyzed using R Studio software. The results showed that yoga significantly improved dynamic balance (SMD = -0.55; CI: -0.85, -0.24), lower-limb muscle strength (SMD = 0.44; CI: 0.21, 0.67), and quality of life (SMD = 0.58; CI: 0.25, 0.92) in older adults, but did not show a significant effect on static balance (SMD = 0.14; CI: -0.20, 0.49). In addition, subgroup analysis indicated that a yoga program performed three or more times per week, lasting 12 weeks or longer, with sessions of 60 minutes, was more effective in improving lower-limb muscle strength, balance ability, and quality of life in older adults.
