문화로의 전환과 '정치주의' 문화전략 -1920년-1925년 사이의 동아일보를 중심으로-

Culture was the link connecting the ideologies of national self-determination and reconstructionism of the March 1st Movement. In this respect, the March 1st Movement may be called “a struggle for culture.” The cultural struggle is particularly prominent set against the reception and spread of the German concept of culture (Kultur) by way of Japan after the opening of doors in colonial Korea. This was a change deserving of the term, “cultural turn.” Such was characteristic of the 1920s, moving towards embracing a cultural era. Using “culturalism” as a key tenet, DongA Ilbo claimed to be spearheading the cultural movement. Here, I make a suggestion for cultural studies from a political perspective(politicalism), the core of which is that culture must be seen as a political strategy to intervene in the reality of a specific period. In this approach, the culture of the 1920s has a critical status as an oblique strategy toward a political goal. In terms of political strategy, there were largely two perceptions of culture. One was based on particularity, which immediately became the starting point of the cultural movement. Hence, culture as a movement emerged, as a strategy focused on particularity. The other perception was based on a sectional concept of culture, as manifested in the various subcultures and a heightened interest in daily culture. The emphasis on the “national culture” had an intermediary role in moving culture out of particularity and into generality. These two processes represented the cultural zeitgeist created through the strategies as understood in the cultural studies from a political perspective.
