조선시대 일기에 나타난 성 의식 －보이는 성, 숨겨진 성－

초록

Sex is included in very personal dimension. Hiding or distorting related to the sexual issues may be a matter of course. Collection of works don’t include the records which may damage the honors of the deceased. However, since diaries contain the personal records without hiding, it is not difficult to find out the records on the intimate sexual experience. This paper investigated the sexual awareness in Joseon period with the focus on the sexual experience observed in diaries. A number of problems including concubines' sons, chaste women, concubinage and conflicts among concubines were related to sexual issues. However, there were a few people who paid attention to the sex itself, the nature of the sexual problems at that time. Generosity on the sexual desire of men was accepted, but the sexual desire of women was relatively oppressed. Men built their own strong castle by preventing the children born by their sexual desires to enter into the mainstream society by naming them ‘concubines' sons’. The sexual issues showed the true appearance of Joseon, not Joseon which we wanted to identify and believe. It’s the fact which is strange to us but we can’t ignore. We have to focus on what kinds of changes were made by such freewheeling sexual life of men in our society.
