초록
This study examines how wellness is designed at the policy and program levels and how it is experienced and interpreted by users within marine healing centers. Building on the multidimensional framework of wellness effects proposed by Liao et al. (2023), the study adopts the Wando Marine Healing Center, the first of its kind in South Korea, as an in-depth case study. The analysis draws on marine-healing–related laws and policy documents, center planning and operational reports, and program materials to identify wellness structures embedded in institutional and program design. In addition, user-generated online reviews were collected and subjected to qualitative content analysis to capture experiential dimensions of wellness. The data were coded according to four dimensions—physical health, psychological health, quality of life, and environmental health—to categorize wellness-related meaning units. The findings indicate that these four dimensions consistently appear across policy and legal frameworks, program design, and user narratives, suggesting a substantial degree of conceptual alignment between institutional wellness goals and lived experiences. At the same time, notable discrepancies emerge in the pathways through which wellness is formed and perceived. At the policy and program levels, wellness is primarily framed through activity-based, center-led interventions, including hydrotherapy, therapeutic treatments, and residential programs emphasizing physical and psychological health outcomes. In contrast, users tend to experience wellness through sensory engagement with the marine environment, including seascapes, fresh air, and the sound of waves; this engagement subsequently unfolds into emotional calm, perceived bodily recovery, and renewed perceptions of everyday life. Users therefore describe wellness less in terms of participation in specific programs and more in terms of immersive and embodied engagement with the marine setting. These findings reveal a misalignment between activity-centered program logics and the environmentally embedded nature of actual wellness experiences. The study suggests that future marine healing center operations should place greater emphasis on experience design that more closely integrates user journeys with marine environmental affordances while supporting longer-term and repeated stays to foster sustained wellness outcomes.
