Exploring the Types of Career Transitions Experienced by College Students: Q methodology

초록

The purpose of this study is to identify and classify the types and characteristics of college students’career transitions using Q methodology. The Q methodology was applied, and the Q-recruitment group consisted of eight college students who met the study’s selection criteria and had experienced a career transition. Finally 34 final Q-samples were selected through a screening process after extracting representative statements. For the P-sample, 26 college students with career transition experiences were selected. Each participant performed Q-sorting of the statements on a 9-point scale ranging from -4 to +4, according to their level of agreement, and selected the most and least agreeable statements. As a result of Q-factor analysis with the QUANL, four types were identified. Type 1 was an internally driven and self-directed transition, Type 2 was a self-initiated growth-oriented approach, Type 3 was a struggling growth pattern, and Type 4 was an externally condition-considering perspective. The significance of this study lies in its balanced understanding and exploration of the experience types focusing on college students’ career transitions, and it can be used as foundational data for providing educational and psychological support to college students undergoing career transitions.
