The Influence of Subjective Career Success on Self-Expansion in Marriage Migrant Women: The Mediating Effect of Basic Psychological Needs

초록

This study investigates how subjective career success influences self-expansion in marriage migrant women, emphasizing the mediating role of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as basic psychological needs, while highlighting their proactive agency in career development. The sample consisted of 260 marriage migrant women with work experience residing in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi, who were recruited via support centers and snowball sampling from workplaces between November 5 and December 22, 2024. Data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0, incorporating frequency, reliability, correlation, and mediation analyses, while employing bootstrapping to assess the significance of the effects. The results revealed that subjective career success directly enhances autonomy, competence, and relatedness, thereby fostering self-expansion. Specifically, marriage migrant women who aligned career achievements with personal goals reported greater control over their work, enhanced skill development, and stronger workplace relationships, which in turn contributed to increased confidence and a broader sense of identity. Moreover, the mediating role of basic psychological needs amplified this effect, as fulfilling these needs further facilitated personal growth through their proactive engagement in career pursuits. Overall, these findings indicate that subjective career success promotes self-expansion, enriching personal meaning and empowering marriage migrant women to actively shape their career paths.
