A Study on China's First Female Architect Lin Huiyin

초록

This paper re-examines the life and achievements of Lin Huiyin(林徽因), China's first female architect, and focuses particularly on her distinctive architectural philosophy known as 'architectural meaning'(建築意). Lin Huiyin viewed architecture not merely as physical structures but as an art form imbued with historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance. Her designs creatively integrated Western architectural techniques with traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics, providing direction for modern Chinese architecture. By analyzing specific examples such as the Beijing Renli Carpet Company and the Monument to the People's Heroes, this study explores how Lin Huiyin’s architectural philosophy was practically implemented. Furthermore, the paper highlights how her contributions as an independent architect have often been overshadowed by her husband Liang Sicheng(梁思成)’s fame, advocating a reassessment of her rightful recognition. Ultimately, this research seeks to understand the modern transformation of Chinese architectural history through Lin Huiyin's architectural ideas and offers practical insights into harmonizing traditional aesthetics with contemporary architectural technology.
