The Ecological Paradigm and Literary Representations

초록

Korean traditional ecological paradigm, Hwajaeng's “bul-il-bul-i(不一不二)” apprehends the existential life as a relation of becoming and process. This principle recognizes this world as a system deeply connected each other; the parts and the whole has mutual influences. This has the common thought with becoming or process philosophies that every life has equal rights and intimate links with others. In this respect, Hwajaeng's thought is similar to the deep ecology. However, a premise of Hwajaeng's “bul-il-bul-i” is emptiness(sūnyatā, 空). The principle of emptiness as a premise of becoming and process is a distinguished point from deep ecology. There are three kinds of eco-literature: environmental literature, life literature, and ecological literature. Environmental literature criticizes environmental pollution, but restricts in within binary-opposition that caused environmental crisis. Life literature represents the dignities of life. It focused on not eco-system but individual life. Ecological literature represents not only the environmental crisis but also the ecosystem which all the beings is closely connected to one another. Moreover, it opens the vision of eco-topia. We must transform completely our life style, paradigm, institutions in present social system into those of community with compassion where individuals in interrelation feels more happiness in this moderation than in its any extension.
